MBR (Membrane Bio-Reactor) is a profound technology, dating back to the late 70's, which combines secondary and tertiary treatment by activated sludge and UF (Ultra-Filtration) membranes for absolute solids/liquid separation.
The MBR technology offers several advantages over the CAS (Conventional Activated Sludge) process, such as the compact design due to high MLSS operation, production of very high quality effluent which can be readily reused, lower sludge production and the enhanced elimination of recalcitrant compounds due to high SRT operation. Furthermore, it is widely classified as BAT (Best Available Technology) in the industrial wastewater treatment sector.
