Technologies  //  Biological Nutrient Removal (BNR)

Biological Nutrient Removal (BNR) process removes total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorus (TP) from wastewater through the use of microorganisms under different environmental conditions in the treatment process.

BNR plants are commonly designed to remove both TN and TP to comply with discharge regulations. The BNR process have to include anaerobic, aerobic and anoxic zones to promote the growth of heterotrophic phosphorous accumulating organisms (PAO), autotrophic nitrification bacteria and heterotrophic de-nitrification bacteria. Common BNR systems include the MLE, A2/O, Bardenpho, UCT and SBR configurations.

The treated wastewater (effluent) can be discharged into a surface or ground water. In some applications with additional polishing process the effluent can be recycled for agriculture usages (irrigation).

EPT has a vast experience in designing and constructing of BNR plants. The proper plant configuration and process units are tailored-made according to the wastewater characteristics and discharge requirements.
